MENTAL HEALTH NURSING

The main objective of Mental Health Nursing Department is to help the students to acquire knowledge and develop proficiency in caring for mentally ill patients and help the students to develop positive attitude in providing care to the patients with various psychiatric disorders.

Various teaching methods were used in explaining psychiatric condition in classroom like lecture cum discussion, Demonstration, Power Point Presentation, Case discussion. Students were evaluated by written test and assignments. Periodical Examination and unit test were conducted in timely basis. Marks are informed to the parents by sending the postal cards.

Clinical postings were planned for the students based on the university prescribed hours. The students were posted in the clinical area, the Mental health center, Perrorkada, Trivandrum. The students are posted in the Respected clinical areas with various wards like BICU, Pay ward, Childrens ward, Family ward, OP, De-addiction ward, Male Rehabilitation, Female Rehabilitation, Chronic Male ward & Chronic Female ward, ECT Room.

The students are required to plan and give care to assigned patients in Psychiatric wards. The students were supervised in clinical areas by clinical Instructors. Students have taken Nursing care plans, Nursing care study, Clinical Presentation, maintained drug book and doing mental status examination and giving Psycho education to the patient in the Respected clinical areas. Completed all Requirements as prescribed in the practical work book. Daily in the clinical area, the students have to write the assigned patient history and doing mental status examination and Neurological examination and write Nursing process for their assigned patient in clinical areas. It was supervised and corrected by the clinical Instructors. They also attended the ECT procedures on every Monday and Thursday.

Clinical performance of the students were assessed using clinical evaluation by the scoring marks, after completing each ward. The students were evaluated by their care plans, care study, presentation, psycho education, drug book by rating scale and completion of activity record. We also conducted practical Examination and objective structured clinical Examination in the clinical areas to assess knowledge technical and practical skills.

Anecdotal notes were maintained for each students. The students had the observational visit to old age homes and visual challenged school. Students have conducted programmes for this people and have given effective counselling.

The students were participated and celebrated important days like Mental Health Day, Anti-drug day and Yoga day. They are conducted the important days on Mental Health were celebrated by the Department Staff and students.
